Given the unusual nature of their dentition it is not surprising that many vampires choose to become dentists. When Jonathan's father is given a posting in Vienna, Jonathan is sent to the city's international school. Even so, Jonathan is bored, for he has seen more international schools than he cares to think of. But then he is diagnosed as needing a brace for his teeth and begins to discover a wacky world of New Brutalist and Deconstructionist roof conversions, with mysterious lifts that lead down into the bowels of the earth - with no intervening stops. Puzzled, he observes that the windows of the cars that emerge from these garages are covered over with tin foil - except for a narrow slit where the driver sits. Suddenly he finds life becoming a whole lot more exciting than a game of Nintendo - and much more dangerous.
