Sahar - The Awakening: Synopsis
|
1991: During a sadly brief period of peace in Israel/Palestine, two students from Vienna film material for a short film. Though pleased with the material they are unable to edit it satisfactorily.
2005: Fourteen years later they return to the project and over a period of three years, a kaleidoscopic parable of East and West emerges.
In the
form of a taxi journey with flashbacks,
the film relates of the encounter between
an anonymous Englishman and the Arab
woman Sahar and of the circumstances
that lead to Sahar having to leave the
country of her birth.

The foreign visitor's arrival
precipitates speculation and mystery
as to his purpose in the country. The
roles projected onto him range from that
of romantic poet to political agent.

At the same time, Sahar's own position
is becoming increasingly insecure and
she realises that she is trapped in a
male dominated world as imprisoning and
rigid as the one represented by the Englishman.
